IN THE WANING LIGHT is one of those books it's best to read in the daytime. But if you must read it at night, make sure you're not alone (even if you don't spook easily), because there are too many moments that make your heart skip a beat and compel you to check that all the doors are locked and the curtains drawn.
Loreth Anne White is now my go-to author for mystery, romantic suspense, and thrillers. IN THE WANING LIGHT is another of her "monsters among us" stories, this one about a true crime writer, Meg Brogan, who thinks she knows the truth behind what destroyed her family 20 years ago. Bit by bit, however, she learns the terrifying details of what really happened that night, as suppressed memories slowly re-surface. And as she pieces the story together, she learns things about her parents and others that break her heart...and the reader's.
As usual, there are a host of suspects, several villains, and one truly villainous killer. Ms. White does a fabulous job of weaving the strands together into a cohesive and hair-raising whole.
Meg is another of Ms. White's now-signature resilient heroines, who in the end finds the strength to do what many of us would have difficulty doing, making a decision she will both regret and rejoice in making. Her relationship with the hero, Blake Sutton, is so realistic, so much a mixture of the past and the present, you can't help rooting for them to find their happy ending.
Only one thing kept this from being a full 5.0 star book for me, but I can't reveal the details because it would be a "spoiler." It came near the end, but didn't really detract from my overall enjoyment of the story, so I only deducted a fraction from my rating.
This was my second reading of IN THE WANING LIGHT, having read it around the time it was first released in November 2015 (I'm sure I intended to leave a review, but...best intentions, and all that, I never did.) Even though I knew the villain, even though I knew the ending, it only added a level of richness to the story this time around. I wasn't tempted (as I often am) to skip ahead to the end to see if my theory of the case is correct. Instead, I was able to revel in the richness of the prose, in the subtle nuances we often miss when we're desperate to reach the end of a story that holds us spellbound.
IN THE WANING LIGHT reminds us that we are all human, and even the best of us can do bad things for good reasons. But it also speaks to the resilience of the human mind, to the courage and fortitude we can all find within ourselves if we seek hard enough for them. IN THE WANING LIGHT justly remains on my keeper shelf beside IN THE BARREN GROUND, A DARK LURE, and a personal favorite, THE SLOW BURN OF SILENCE."

The characters are very real and lifelike as you read the book. The mystery is tight and tragic. Don't decide who the criminal and bad guys are too soon. You will be sorely disappointed. Loved this book and fully intend to read more books written by Ms. White.
- I started out very impressed with IN THE WANING LIGHT. Good description, sense of tension, and intriguing story line. Soon I noticed one irritating tic--the author is never simply angry or nervous or frustrated. Every emotion is described in unnecessary detail. Okay, I can handle that. But twenty percent into the book I was totally yanked out of the story by this extremely annoying habit Anxiety trickles through the heroine; stomachs churn in "an oily roll of conflict"; "the sick oiliness in his stomach slithered toward his bowels." Stomachs fold, emotions claw, surprise blossoms, hot coals begin to burn in her gut, expressions chase through his face. And yes, even a "spark of irritation spat through Blake." All in the space of a few pages. Please. Stop. I cannot believe others didn't pick up on this, especially since there was similar gushes on every page. It reminded me of a bad romance novel out of the seventies.
The characterization also went from potentially interesting to superficial and then eye-rolling. Twenty-two years later the hero is every bit as in love/lust at first encounter with the delicately gorgeous heroine as if life and life's experiences had not interceded. Sorry, but I quit reading after the young son, Noah, upon barely meeting Meg the Heroine, catches her and his father in the beginnings of an embrace and cries that his dad only married the (dead) mom because Meg the Heroine went away and now (dad) is stuck with (son), " the kid he never wanted in the first place." This author obviously doesn't go in for subtlety either in characterization or style.
I confess I didn't finish IN THE WANING LIGHT. I really tried and I don't generally give reviews unless I complete something. Had I persevered to the end, my head would have been hammering as if pounded by a dozen anvils and my stomach would have been flopping about as if I'd swallowed an ocean of fish and...
To sum up my review with some good editing and a few tweaks in writing style, Loreth Ann White would not only be a popular writer but an accomplished one. Hope she continues to hone her writing skills. - I enjoyed this book. It was the first that I read from this author. One of the things the book highlighted is that you really don't know people and they are not always what they seem to be. Also, that keeping secrets can destroy people lives, especially dark secrets. I think what was shown for all the characters is that keeping secrets is not the best way to help someone you love. You also learned that even if you get away with horrible things done in the past, if you are a human being, it will never leave you and haunt you for the rest of your life. I would recommend this book and plan to read others from the author.
- This book has a LOT going on. You have to pay close attention as it switches perspectives frequently. It really is a thriller, and i even caught myself having to STOP reading it while at home a lone, because of how real it seems! I really like how the author writes this story as well. The end has a little more emotion than i hoping for, but it did get me wrapped up even more, so I guess it's also a great thing!! Be careful, as you would want to NOT put this book down.... ever
- I think In the Waning Light is one of the best contemporary romantic suspense novels I have read. And believe me, I have read a lot of them. I took a chance reading a book by an author who was unfamiliar. The book was fast paced and kept you guessing. Just as I thought I had figured out who the villain was, I was proved wrong. The characters were real. It was easy to visualize everything. I am now looking forward to reading more of Loreth Ann White's books. She has become one of my "go-to" authors.
