In this follow-up to his popular bestseller Face the Music, the Starchild takes us behind the scenes, revealing what he’s learned from a lifetime as the driving force of KISS, and how he brings his unique sensibility not only to his music career but to every area of his life—from business to parenting to health and happiness.

"In Backstage Pass, Paul Stanley takes the reader on a very personal, very honest look at the various relationships and experiences that have helped shape him into the multifaceted person that he is today. Successful on many levels, but most importantly, as a person who is at peace with himself and is always striving to improve; strong enough to share his vulnerabilities, uncompromising in his work ethic and vision. This book packs in several lifetimes of wisdom, together with special insider insight into the drive that shaped one of the most influential rock bands of all time. A great motivational read, whether you’re a Kiss fan or not."

Backstage Pass Paul Stanley 9780062820280 Books Reviews

  • I'll preface this by saying that I'm a big Paul fan and thoroughly enjoyed "Face The Music". I thought it was a great read and provided some real insight into Paul beyond the carefully crafted public persona that existed for so long. That said, this book really falls short of getting anywhere near his first book. I can best sum it up by saying that the book reads like a long Paul interview....you know the ones-the canned, rehearsed-line, perfectly tailored interview that seems....artificial.

Paul touches on many of the same subjects as Face, but it feels more surface-level and repeated. Many sections of this book felt like reading him make the same point in 20 different ways, but nothing especially insightful or unique, just Paul platitudes. There are also some funny claims he makes..Dude...we love ya, but no...running around onstage is NOT "pretty much" like being an NFL player, no many how many times you repeat it. You're not an elite athlete, and that's fine. Paul being Paul.

This one just seems really self-indulgent....which he may argue "exactly!" I'd say grab it from the library and don't expect much.
  • Paul Stanley is a man who wears many hats. All of them have one thing in common. A desire to succeed combined with a passion for self satisfaction. For me it will always be the epitome of what a Rock Star and front man should be. That is the man that resonates with me, but if you think that's all he is, you are sadly mistaken. Simply stated, he is and has always be my muse and my musical idol for many reasons. Long live The Starchild!
  • Paul Stanley has always been a philosopher, and it's hard to argue with the final results he's rich, famous, happy, healthy, creatively fulfilled, with a loving wife and family. This book is about the evolution in his thinking about life that got him there. Some may see his can do positivism as simplistic and cliché, but as he says in the lyrics of his song, "Live to Win,"
"You ask me how I make my way...
....But the truth sounds like a lie"

Cliché's often become cliché's because they are true. While some of this book covers familiar territory from his previous autobiography, Backstage is much more geared towards Paul pontificating about his approach to life extemporaneously. It often reads like it was culled from Paul being interviewed. As such, it is sometimes repetitive or even contradictory, but so what? Stanley, like Whitman before him, "contains multitudes." He has lived a profoundly full and exciting life by any standards, and for those willing to take the deep dive with him there are pearls of wisdom and nuggets of gold to be found here. Everything from practical ways to instill empathy in your children, and the benefits of low weight and high reps when it comes to building the body you want, to deeper more esoteric philosophies about the creation of art, and the healthiest way to approach your own mortality is broached here. Paul is not shy about admitting his own mistakes along the way, and doesn't claim to have all the answers, but the path he has forged with his life is bright, and can no doubt help light your way as you navigate your own journey, if you let it.
  • despite any protestations to the contrary, this book is in the "self help" genre. it is at least nominally colored by an "if i can do it you can do it too" approach. this book is at its best--by far--when the insights are grounded in--and extend from--real world examples. the author's voice is, just as it was in Face The Music, authentic and honest. and his being true to a perilous vision, and the resulting massive success, are, well, really cool--certainly kiss influenced me greatly and in truly positive ways. (hence the 4 stars.) there are times here--and more than a few--when the platitudes are so densely piled together that they become hard to swallow. i am happy to have bought and read the book. (although i can hear the author's responses to what i am about to say--and they are fair!--i offer the following any way--in keeping with his own such suggestions (!).) he offers stuff on all kinds of topics. but money is not one of his prioritized topics. were i to ever have lunch with him, i'd wanna ask him about that (in a general, non-prying, way). when is enough enough? how much does it per se matter compared to other considerations? his book--his choices! i get that. i chose to buy the book! i get that. maybe he'll write another one, and i'll get that, too.

  • I think this book was therapeutic for Paul Stanley. Not much of a good read
  • Written from his heart with honesty and respect, Paul’s journey through life inspires everyone to “live your best life.” Speaks to the heart.
  • I used to respect Paul as a songwriter and a person but his second book is more of the same from his first book. His agenda? Throw Everyone Under the bus while making himrself look as good as possible. Paul did not design the KISS logo, Ace did. Paul is a Kiss revisionist historian who provides tired, canned answers about everything. If you believe Paul, he split the atom at age 2, invented shock rock, and everything else related to rock and roll. Paul is a vocalist who can no longer sing, a garage band level guitarist, and a hack painter. This book is pure fiction. Save your money for Peter's book.
