- I love everything about it, so practical and useful with expert references. It's a wonderful antidote to the anxious shame based focus so much parenting advice seems to employ in America. Easily readable, yet scientific enough for this academic mother to feel enriched by it. My only criticisms are that I think the book Precious Little Sleep should have been mentioned in the sleep area, and perhaps she should have taken a moment to address the Rock N' Play issues currently all over the news when mentioning that product.
- I'm an economics student and a new parent and this book provides exactly what you expect out a professor from a good university - data driven decision making. When we started our journey as parents, we were bombarded with a ton of advice and opinions from other parents and even practicing nurses, with no real scientific basis for anything. I'll give you an example. In the hospital where our child was born, a nurse came and yelled at us for letting our child suck on a pacifier. We were traumatized. Fortunately, our pediatrician stopped by and answered all our questions and educated us about "Nipple Confusion". If we had this book earlier, I would have been much more calm when the uninformed nurse wreaked havoc.
This book does a prefect job of picking some of those most common "opinions" (like "nipple confusion") and analyzes them with hard data and science.
I'm really happy Emily wrote this book. If you believe in science and data, this book will make your childcare journey much more pleasant. - One of the most overwhelming things as a parent is making decisions about what will be best for your child and your family. I’ve definitely had my preferences about sleep training, baby feeding, and discipline, but I think every mom doubts herself sometimes and wonders if she’s really doing things the “right†way or if she’s completely screwing up her child.
This is why we needed Emily Oster’s book. Her pregnancy book Expecting Better was like a guidebook for me during pregnancy, and although I had to wait 2 years for this parenting book, it was definitely worth the wait. Oster simply outlines the research behind many of the big parenting decisions, including how and what to feed our children, vaccinations, discipline, education, screen time and potty training. Just like in Expecting Better, she doesn’t give advice but simply outlines the research, allowing the reader to use that information to guide their own decision making.
As a mom, I’ve loved reading about which decisions don’t really seem to matter much in the long run, and which I should take a little more seriously. This book helps me feel like an informed parent, which allows me to feel more confident as a mother.
But my favorite part of this book is that in almost every chapter, Oster doesn’t just discuss how parenting decisions affect the children, but the parents as well. Almost all parenting advice that you read only talks about the children, but what about us? We are also impacted by our parenting choices, and we should consider our own well- being when making any decisions about our family. I hope that this sparks a new trend in parenting advice, where parents are allowed to think about themselves also. - I pre-ordered this book after a friend gave me a copy of Expecting Better, and I was not disappointed. This is a valuable resource for parents, covering many of the big issues like breastfeeding, cosleeping, etc. There are a number of valuable charts to bookmark for future reference (like on weight loss after birth, and language development to pick a couple of examples). Also it's an enjoyable read, interspersing personal anecdote with data analysis.
As in Expecting Better, Cribsheet discusses one topic at a time, summarizing the available research and suggesting some factors to consider in personal decision making. It isn't about telling you what you should do, more of a guide to how to go about making your decisions. Although it does generally explain things like percentiles, study design, etc, people with at least a little background and interest in statistics/research methods may enjoy it more, but I don't think it ever gets too technical. Discussions about pregnancy and parenting are far too commonly dominated by conflicting assertions backed up with an unholy amalgam of anecdotes, judgement, pseudoscience, and cherry picking. A book like this, which tells the reader what we actually know (and what we actually don't) hopefully helps parents to feel confident making informed decisions based on what's right for their family. - This book is excellent. I loved it. I’d put it on my recommended reading list for new parents who want to know what the research really says about the first three years of parenting, from the perspective of a data-driven economist.
The book takes a unique approach by combining an economist toolkit for reviewing and evaluating research with practical, experience-driven tips and advice on the first three years of parenting.
The book tackles a number of critical issues that often trouble and confuse new parents. We’ve all heard so much “conventional wisdom†in both directions on many issues that we don’t know what to think. Oster comes to the rescue by providing an empirical evaluation of the research on each topic.
For each topic, Oster presents (1) what published research is out there, (2) a methodological evaluation of that research, (3) the core takeaways from the research, and (4) how to think about the findings in the context of other practical considerations of being a parent.
Overall, the book is a brilliant yet accessible synthesis of empirical research, parenting tips, real-life experiences, and humor that any parent can appreciate and learn from. I loved it and finished it within a few hours of receiving it earlier this week. Highly recommended!

- EVERYthing you need to know about paint pouring. This book had it all From buying supplies, to SELLING your finished project. Tons of info, lots of demo photos that you can actually see .... and ESPECIALLY lots of samples of his art at the back. BTW if you want to see the photos at a larger size, hold your finger on the picture till a pop-up window with ZOOM shows up and click on it. You will have the photo fill up the screen to see more detail.
- This book was informative but stopped being useful about as abruptly as it began. The mixing recipes are really only 2 types. Expensive and Budget and just 1 of each. The techniques used were all ones I had guessed or experimented on my own. Included was a hammering method which just looks and sounds absurd and messy. Overall, I wish I had this book when I first started so as to save myself some headaches and money in mixing the paints. This book is for the beginner, if you have been pouring for a while, even a month, you wont learn anything.

- This was absolutely terrible and not funny and not interesting. Yuck
- This book had me in stitches from page one. It’s a collection of short essays and the content rings true for anyone who has experienced this thing called life. The author is a modern day Erma Bombeck. I learned so many Southern Lady codes that I fear I’m becoming a Southerner - not a bad thing!
- A fun book of amusing essays, many of which I could relate to on multiple levels. Beneath the humor, there’s a sense of a warm, caring woman who knows who she is and what she wants. This is a woman who’d be fun to have as a friend. Easy read.
- I would read a shopping list if Helen Ellis wrote it. I loved this book.

Southern Lady Code is a title that carries a code of its own. Some people use the word “lady†to describe European royalty; some to describe a courteous woman, which is what I anticipated here; and some use it to describe a well-mannered woman with a very comfortable income, which appears to be the author’s operating definition. In terms of the “code,†I thought I’d be reading straight satire, but discovered that she has provided a combination of self-help tips and searing, sometimes raucous humor. It works surprisingly well.
I have never made a cheese log before or wanted one, but Ellis’s recipe sounds so persuasively delicious that I may try it. That said, my favorite essays were short on advice and long on humor. I nearly hurt myself laughing over the construction man she found masturbating in her bedroom—did I mention that she gets a little edgy here? And “The Ghost Experience†is massively entertaining. There’s a lot of good material. Though at times her outlook is a little more conservative than my own, I like the things she says in support of gay and trans friends.
Ultimately, I suspect that I am not the target audience for Ellis, who in her middle-aged years is dispensing life skills wrapped in bountiful amounts of humorous anecdotes. She is writing to her peers and to those women younger than herself. I am ten or twenty years older than this woman, but I still came away impressed. So, ladies and women, if you can look past the assumption of a greater-than-average income, you’ll have a good time here, and if you can’t, try to get this collection at the library and read selectively, because more of these essays will resonate than not, for all of us.
I rate this book four giggles, and it will be available to the public tomorrow, April 16, 2019. - If I've said it once, I've said it a million times - any book that can make me laugh out loud immediately wins its place on my metaphorical shelf of books worth reading.
Southern Lady Code is a short, snappy book full of hilarious essays by Helen Ellis about her life as a woman who grew up in the South. Interestingly enough, I'm not sure I would call this a "southern" work in the way that books by Joshilyn Jackson or William Faulkner are absolutely steeped in southern culture and setting. Ellis has spent a large part of her adult life in New York, and a lot of the stories are very "upper crust NYC" in their sensibilities. The title comes into play as she examines all of the different experiences she has in her life through the lens of this "code" that she learned from growing up in the south. The code is in her own words - "a technique by which, if you don't have something nice to say, you say something not-so-nice in a nice way." As someone who has spent her whole life in the South, I can confirm that almost everything she says is true - it is (unfortunately) not some over-exaggeration of the characteristics of a "southern lady."
Despite this, I don't think that someone would need to be from the south to enjoy this collection - I think it has something to appeal to all women, as it's really about life as a modern American woman. She holds absolutely nothing back, and shares anecdotes that will have you barking with laughter.

This is an amazing story that will draw you in from beginning to end. The chemistry between them is off the charts hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. - If you like mountain man romances, you will enjoy this book. The characters are interesting, well-developed and have chemistry. The story is interesting, well-written with a happily ever after. In addition to receiving an arc, I purchased the book for my collection.

Ray is running away from the big city where is brother died as result of a car accident with a drink driver. Running into each other literally makes them both question what life holds for them. Entertaining.

- Very rarely, I hear a phrase so poignant it is able to stop time., It leaves me frozen, and emotions once pushed down rush to the surface and explode, all superficial thoughts stopping for the briefest of moments. In this place appears a gap in time, an immeasurable space experienced by everyone at some point in their lives, the moment where it becomes clear a change is necessary. Most often, when this happenesd to me, it’s not truly the phrase that is unusual, instead, it’s a simple “run of the mill†utterance for many who hear it; it passes other people by as if it were floating on the breeze. But, for me, that sentence cut me, it went in, fast, deep straight to my heart.That phrase manifested not as a thought but as a feeling, a visceral physical reaction, something my body once had but lost. It was once there, but from a place both forgotten and neglected, this phrase bought it back. This feeling was brought back while watching the Kindness Diaries and then more so again and again while reading “Go be Kindâ€. These reactions seeped deep into my consciousness and would not be shaken, they had taken hold and would only grow.
“Go Be Kind†is the book by the Leon Logothetis, who is also the creator of the Netflix and Prime show The Kindness Diaries. The show is Leon traveling the world with no money relying solely on the kindness of others for this survival (he does not accept money only kindness). “Go Be Kind†is a more detailed journal that is independent of the TV series, but makes many references to the show in its text. In a sense, it gives the reader a road map to their own kindness journey.
Yes, there was another truth when I first received the “Go be Kind bookâ€. To be completely honest, I thought it was absolute garbage! I skimmed it and was put off by the font. Yes, that’s right, the font offended me, you see, I am a 12 point Arial Font guy and this “Diary of a Wimpy Kid†style font looked liked a kids book to me. I stopped at a couple of pages and thought it was simply recycled content from the TV show It appeared to me that Leon was trying to squeeze some extra pennies out of his show by writing a book.
Needless to say, I left it where I skimmed it, in the bathroom. But, on a later visit, I decided it might be worth a second chance. After watching the netflix series, I knew Leon was not a penny squeezing kind of guy. so I picked it up and started to read it! Imagine that. And, with a new perspective and an open mind, my feelings changed. Each chapter is organized into unique “adventures†and if you read and try and follow the exercises, it really probes deep and forces you to think, to examine who you are and what it really means to be kind.
In order to help its readers, the text is written in a supportive style, and, often, it preemptively has an answer to the challenges the “adventures†present. Similar to the overall theme of the book, it seems to treat the reader with the same compassion and kindness it teaches. However, some of the adventures are particularly challenging. For example, the third adventure asks the reader to find people who might appear lonely, or someone who looks different that you, and give them a genuine compliment. It sounds simple right? However, for me, and I’m sure for many others who picked this book up with the intention of learning to be more kind, while simple, it was not easy at all. Nevertheless, perseverance delivers. Actually following through with the exercise feels uplifting and freeing!
Some of the adventures are more straightforward, while others are considerably more difficult, such as approaching and talking to strangers about kindness. Boy, that was a tough one, yet the exercise playing cell phone roulette and just calling someone and connecting seamed easier, but no less meaningful. Lots of adventures involve going out into the world and connecting with those around you, but quite a few are reflective, almost therapeutic exercises such as examining when and why you treated someone poorly.
It is clear that Leon has really thought this book through, it’s a journey in of itself. I would guess these are all activities that Leon performed and meditated on himself over the past years on his journey to being kind both with himself and others. In addition, throughout the book, there are references to being lonely or feeling like an outsider. It’s certainly a book for us outsiders, people who feel isolated, or at least have at some point in their lives. Leon shares how this happened to him at school and how it changed and shaped his life.
In summary, the book will continue to change me and others who read it. It has given me the gap that only kindness will, the gap between an event and my reaction to it, one that will help me deal first with myself, then with my family, and finally to engage with the world with a greater sense of connection, compassion and kindness.
Read the book, do the exercises, ignore the font, you will grow to love it!, watch the show, and be kind- starting with yourself. - This is not just a book or journal. It's more of an action guide to a kindness adventure! The world around us keeps giving us messages that things are dark, sad, hopeless, and just downright horrible. I found Leon’s Netflix show "The Kindness Diaries" (check it out!) a few months back when I was feeling pretty low. I cried every episode; they were tears of deep gratitude and connection. Connection because I was reminded that there is kindness everywhere around us and we have more in common than we realize, and gratitude because Leon and his crew were out there finding ways to remind all of us that kindness matters and is possible every day, in ways big and small. I’ve always been told by others that I’m a kind person, but through Leon’s show and Facebook page, I've begun to realize I have become rather self absorbed in my own problems and worries. I was so bogged down with work and life and worry that I had stopped going outside my comfort zone to really reach out to others. Let’s face it – we can all find ourselves stuck there! When this book arrived in the mail, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would it be tiny print text of narrative, with a few exercises thrown in at the end of each chapter? Nope! I should have known that with Leon’s engaging style and adventurous spirit, it would be something far different! I was thrilled to open it up and begin looking through it. It’s A KINDNESS ADVENTURE ACTION GUIDE, easy to read and follow, full of energizing and meaningful words of wisdom and guides for putting kindness into action.
I highly recommend the hardcover version, since it is designed for you to draw, write, color, journal in, etc.
